Importing from DVD

Postby erithacus » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:58 am

To date I haven't found an easy way of importing non-copyright media from DVD Video. The last time I tried it I managed to transcode the VOB file to Quicktime format, but it took about twelve hours for Avid Xpress to import the (30 minute) clip!

Does anyone know if there is a definitive guide to importing from DVD, including the best settings and codecs to transcode with minimal loss of quality but without taking all day please?

Any advice thankfully received.

There is a slew of DVD-to-file converters, but, since you are not specifying the platform, I guess you are not looking for specific recommendations. Generally speaking, you should choose to convert to uncompressed video. Compered to any compressed format, Avid will handle that much faster and with least trouble. But your best bet is to use a DVD player with an SDI output, which will provide the most straight-forward operation and best quality.
